Baby wipes are a must-have when you’re traveling with baby, but because you use it on baby’s sensitive skin, it’s important to choose the right type. Here are some pointers in choosing baby wipes for your baby’s regular use:
Ingredients. Mothers must be wary of using products made with ingredients that are unfit for the baby. Some conventional baby wipes are made with ingredients such as alcohol, mineral oil, or fragrance, which can irritate baby’s skin and cause rashes. You can use these for your own sanitation needs, but not for your baby.
On the other hand, there are wipes with ingredients that you do want to have, like vitamin E, aloe vera, and witch hazel, which soothe, clean, and moisturize baby’s skin.
Just make sure to look for wipes that are alcohol-free, fragrance-free, and hypoallergenic.
Green options. Due to the call for environmental awareness on a more global scale, there are plenty of manufacturers who choose to provide ‘green’ alternatives to consumers. Some baby wipes are actually reusable: use them, wash them, then use them again. They are made of materials such as organic cotton, flannel, hemp, and wool, which are all safe for your baby and the environment.
Some wipes are also flushable and completely biodegradable.
DIY. If you opt for washable wipes for the baby, you may want to go the extra distance by making them yourself. You can get a bundle of soft fabrics like flannels from the discount store, cut them up, and carry them around with a wetting solution that you can use to moisten the cloth when it’s time to wipe your baby clean. Ingredients such as lavender essential oil or jojoba and tea tree oil can be mixed with baby shampoo. But limit your use of aromatherapy oils to prevent irritation.
